Collaborating with a international team of developers in response to an RFP furnished by the Borough of Fort Lee, New Jersey, H envisioned an ambitious new development for a currently empty tract of land located just off the George Washington Bridge. Out of the over 15-acre-area project site, H focused on the 8-acre westerly block to create a retaildriven mixed-use center, encompassing a pedestrian-oriented shopping mall, cinema complex, spa facilities and an office tower anchoring the north-eastern corner of the block.

Fort Lee’s rich historical heritage was used to enrich a number of important components in the site, including an open pedestrian mall that was carefully choreographed with historical themes from the revolutionary era. The pedestrian mall additionally includes an innovative tensile fabric roof, allowing the mall to remain shaded and naturally ventilated, with energy-load reduction in mind. Finally, Fort Lee’s legacy as the birthplace of filmmaking was reflected in the dynamically-themed environment of an enclosed mall. The vibrant and immersive historical identity of the block culminates with a Motion Picture Atrium, which aspires to become an American Motion Pictures’ Hall of Fame for the surrounding region.
